David Villa's brace rallies New York City FC to win over Seattle Sounders
David Villa scored his 50th and 51st career MLS goals to help New York City FC rally to beat the Seattle Sounders 2-1 at a rain-soaked Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
Christian Roldan gave the Sounders the lead with a fine finish in the 40th minute, just as the rainfall began to make play difficult.
Passes along the ground soon became impossible as the ball stopped in puddles, but Villa still managed to take control and hit the crossbar in the opening seconds of the second half.
The former Spain striker then equalised from the penalty spot with his landmark 50th goal in the 53rd minute after the referee ruled Oniel Fisher tripped him up in a controversial decision.
And Villa added the winner in the 78th minute by running onto Jack Harrison’s cross and placing a perfect volley past NYCFC keeper Stefan Frei.
Chad Marshall’s last-gasp header fell wide of the post as the Sounders’ two-game winning streak came to an end.
